Andy Burnham Set to Lead Labour Party and Become Prime Minister

Andy Burnham is set to become the next leader of the Labour Party later this week, having garnered enough support from Members of Parliament to prevent any potential challenges. The former Mayor of Greater Manchester, who is poised to succeed Keir Starmer as the Prime Minister next week, secured backing from 349 MPs by the nomination deadline on Monday. This effectively rules out the possibility for any other Labour MPs to meet the 81 MP threshold required to contest the leadership.

Following his return to Parliament after serving as Mayor for nine years, Burnham will be officially announced as the new Labour leader during a special conference on Friday. Just 72 hours later, on July 20, he is expected to enter 10 Downing Street for the first time as the Prime Minister. On Monday evening, Labour MPs were scheduled to question Burnham about his government plans in a virtual hustings event organized by the party.

Burnham’s focus will be on promoting inclusive growth across all areas, empowering communities, and addressing the cost of living as key priorities. This approach is aimed at uniting the party and the country during what he describes as a crucial moment. He also plans to emphasize the importance of valuing and engaging with every Member of Parliament, highlighting a commitment to inclusivity within the party.

Acknowledging the diverse nature of the Labour Party, Burnham pledges to reflect this diversity in his appointments. Meanwhile, Keir Starmer began his final week in office by engaging with European allies of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy and is expected to participate in Bastille Day events in Paris before his last Prime Minister’s Questions session.

Amidst the transition, Rachel Reeves, anticipated to be replaced as Chancellor, cautioned Burnham to stay focused on his goals and to be prepared for the challenges of governance in the UK. She stressed the importance of maintaining clarity and determination in achieving his objectives as unforeseen obstacles arise during his leadership.
