“PM Carney Unveils $1 Trillion Investment Prospects in Canada”

A variety of investment opportunities, including a floating LNG terminal on the coast of British Columbia, a high-speed rail line connecting Edmonton and Calgary, and a pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific Ocean, will be highlighted by Prime Minister Mark Carney at an upcoming investment summit in Toronto. The detailed 66-page prospectus, obtained by CBC News, provides a comprehensive overview of the investment prospects that Ottawa and Canadian business leaders aim to present during the event.

Scheduled for September 14 and 15, the summit, organized by the prime minister in collaboration with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Public Sector Pension Investment Board, seeks to attract $1 trillion in investments from international investors and Canadian business leaders. Notably, invitations have been extended to major investment firms and sovereign wealth funds globally as part of a broader strategy to draw capital amidst trade disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties.

The investment opportunities are categorized into eleven areas, encompassing conventional energy, clean energy, mining and metals, marine and port infrastructure, power and utilities, digital technology, advanced manufacturing, and transportation projects. Each project is detailed in terms of its current status, required capital expenditure, and the type of investment needed for its development.

Some of the significant projects include a $57 billion US expansion of the Port of Churchill, a $44 billion investment in Nova Scotia’s Wind West offshore wind project, a proposed $35 billion West Coast oil pipeline from Alberta to British Columbia, and the $28.5 billion Ksi Lisims LNG terminal project.

Additionally, the prospectus features plans for a float glass manufacturing facility in Manitoba, expanded manufacturing capacity for defense-related night-vision technology, satellite technology for Earth observation, and various infrastructure projects. Projects like the Ksi Lisims LNG terminal are described as “fully permitted and shovel ready,” while others are in earlier stages of development.

Notable exclusions from the list include the Alto high-speed rail project between Toronto and Quebec City, which faces resistance due to land expropriation concerns, and any privatization plans for airports under consideration by Carney’s government. The document also outlines a $10.9 billion proposal for a high-speed passenger rail line connecting Calgary and Edmonton, a $35 billion oil pipeline project, and a $2.1 billion US expansion for Calgary-based South Bow’s Prairie Connector pipeline.

Moreover, the prospectus emphasizes clean energy initiatives, such as nuclear power in New Brunswick, carbon capture in Saskatchewan, and wind power and green hydrogen projects in Newfoundland and Labrador. Canada’s leadership in artificial intelligence is highlighted as well, with investment opportunities in data centers and quantum computing technology.

The summit aims to showcase Canada as a lucrative investment destination across various sectors, presenting diverse opportunities for potential investors.
