“Canada Claims Flag Football World Titles, Secures Olympic Spots”

Canada’s women’s flag football team emerged victorious over the United States to claim the world title, while the men’s squad secured a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics during the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championships held in Düsseldorf, Germany. The women’s team, having already secured a spot with a 20-6 win against top-seeded Mexico in the semifinals, sealed a flawless tournament with a 27-20 triumph over the American team in the final match.

Frederique Morneau made a significant impact with three touchdown receptions for Canada, while quarterback Sara Parker connected with Caroline Moquin-Joubert for another score. Parker, who recorded a total of 23 touchdown passes, was honored as the most valuable player of the women’s tournament.

In the men’s category, Canada’s team clinched a 34-26 victory over Mexico in the third-place match, ensuring their participation in the 2028 Olympics. Quarterback Michael O’Connor led the charge with 294 yards and five touchdowns, with former NFL tight end Antony Auclair contributing 149 receiving yards and two touchdown catches. Daniel Petermann and James Drysdale also found the end zone to secure the win.

Both Canadian teams’ achievements guarantee their presence at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with flag football making its Olympic debut. Despite a loss to Italy in the men’s semifinals, Canada’s third-place finish turned crucial as the American men advanced to the final, setting up a showdown for an Olympic qualification.

Reflecting on the success, head coach Paul LaPolice expressed pride in the team’s performance, emphasizing the dedication and hard work that led to the Olympic qualification. LaPolice highlighted the significance of both men’s and women’s teams qualifying together, indicating a promising future for Canadian flag football.

In the men’s final, the United States secured a 42-26 victory over Italy.
