Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the bottom-ranked Calgary Wild pulled off a surprising 4-3 victory over the top-seeded Ottawa Rapid in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium over the weekend.
Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton doubling the lead approximately 13 minutes later. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, with Melanie Forbes equalizing at 2-2 just before halftime.
Thurton struck again just before the break to secure her brace, propelling the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also got on the scoresheet for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, seeing their 10-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
Despite controlling possession for 54% of the match, the Rapid were outshot 16-13 (with a 9-6 on-target advantage) by the Wild. Calgary also earned six of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the score and then secured a second goal five minutes into the second-half stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 triumph over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had given the fourth-placed Tides a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. The Rise dominated possession with 56%, outshooting the Tides 18-13 (6-4 on target). Halifax took four of the six corners in the game, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued.
