A distinctive feature of the narwhal is its unique straight tusk, which can grow up to three meters long and is an upper tooth that protrudes through the whale’s lip on the left side. This straight growth pattern has puzzled researchers, but a recent study sheds light on the mystery. Researchers discovered that the tusk’s straightness is attributed to the presence of two opposing spirals, one going right and the other left, as detailed in a new research publication in the journal Nature Communications.

The investigation into the narwhal tusk’s structure began when a chemistry expert, intrigued by the directionality of certain molecules, shared observations about the consistent leftward spiraling of narwhal tusks in Greenland.
