This shot secured the Winnipeg Sea Bears their maiden Canadian Elite Basketball League championship. The victory was celebrated with confetti swirling in the air and the anthem “We Are the Champions” by Queen resonating throughout the arena as fans and players reveled in the 98-84 triumph.
Reflecting on the moment, Hildebrandt described it as a surreal experience. He shared, “It was super random. I had no thoughts, no emotions, it all kind of went blank and then [we] started celebrating.” This championship win marked the fourth season for Winnipeg in the CEBL, with the team’s inaugural game in 2023 being clinched by the late Chad Posthumus, also a Winnipeg native.
Drawing parallels to Posthumus’s memorable game-winning shot, Hildebrandt acknowledged the significance of following in his footsteps. The Sea Bears’ head coach, Mike Raimbault, who also mentors the University of Winnipeg’s men’s basketball team, commemorated the moment by involving Posthumus’s parents in the postgame festivities.
Despite facing challenges due to the absence of key players like Teddy Allen, Emmanuel Akot, and Jeremiah Tilmon Jr., the Sea Bears navigated through the playoffs with victories over the Saskatchewan Mamba and Vancouver Bandits. The championship showdown against the Brampton Honey Badgers, originally planned as a best-of-three series, was swiftly condensed into a single decisive game due to unforeseen circumstances.
Xavier Moon, the standout guard for the Sea Bears, emerged as the game’s top scorer with 29 points in the final, earning him the title of CEBL’s finals MVP. Moon, a three-time league MVP, expressed the significance of winning the championship in a city that had never tasted playoff success before.
In addition to the triumph on the court, the Sea Bears set a new single-game attendance record with 12,519 fans flocking to downtown Winnipeg to witness the historic victory. David Asper, the chair and owner of the Sea Bears, emphasized the community support and hard work that culminated in this achievement.
