Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh narrowly missed out on the gold medal by 0.02 seconds in the women’s 200-meter individual medley at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. The reigning Olympic and world champion settled for silver behind China’s Yu Yiting, who set a championship record with a time of 2:07.45. American Alex Walsh secured the bronze in 2:07.66.
Yu initially led with a world-record pace on the butterfly leg, but American Regan Smith took over during the backstroke. Yu regained the lead on the breaststroke and held off McIntosh in the final meters. McIntosh, who had won gold in the 400m medley and silver in the 200m freestyle, also contributed to Canada earning bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
At 19 years old, McIntosh competed in her final individual race as a teenager, reflecting on her achievements and looking forward to gaining more experience in her 20s. Meanwhile, fellow Canadian Alexanne Lepage clinched the gold in the women’s 200m breaststroke, outshining reigning champion Kate Douglass. Lepage expressed her shock at her victory, while Canada finished the championships with 13 medals, including three golds.
In other events, Taylor Ruck set a Canadian record in the women’s 50m freestyle, and Australian Sam Short won the men’s 1,500 free with the sixth-fastest time in history. Lani Pallister of Australia caused an upset by defeating Katie Ledecky in the 800m freestyle, ending Ledecky’s streak of international victories. The U.S. dominated the overall medal standings at the championships.
