Two individuals were apprehended, and law enforcement officers were swiftly taken to a medical facility following chaotic scenes at an anti-immigration demonstration characterized by ‘mob rule’.
Authorities disclosed that a substantial number of resources were dispatched to Thetford, Norfolk, the previous night as a sizable assembly congregated on a residential street. Allegedly, certain members of the group endeavored to gain entry to a residence, prompting a confrontation with police upon their intervention.
According to the police, a male officer was hit by a rock, a female officer was bitten, and another officer was spat at. Two arrests were executed for various offenses, including public order breaches, harassment, and possession of a weapon deemed offensive.
A man in his forties remains in custody, while Brian Thompson, 68, hailing from Thetford, faced charges related to the possession of an offensive weapon, specifically a wooden bat. Thompson has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on August 25.
A spokesperson for Norfolk Police indicated, “Around 9:30 pm, officers were alerted to reports of individuals within the group attempting to enter a residential property.
“Upon police intervention, members of the group turned physically aggressive towards the officers – resulting in two officers being hospitalized after one was struck by a rock and another was severely bitten, causing a break in the skin.
“A third officer was also subjected to being spat at.”
Earlier, a substantial crowd had congregated outside the police station for the demonstration, which law enforcement described as predominantly peaceful. The unrest followed a previous incident on Tuesday night, during which windows were shattered, fences were damaged, and individuals attempted to force entry into a residence.
The upheaval was incited by rumors suggesting that the properties were being utilized to accommodate asylum seekers. Footage circulated on social media depicted five men being escorted from the homes by police as an irate crowd jeered and demanded they vacate.
Local Labour MP Terry Jermy condemned the turmoil, stating, “Residents have been forcefully evicted from their dwellings – a place of refuge – with reports of intruders breaking into homes, looting possessions, and vandalizing property.
“This must have been an extremely distressing ordeal for the individuals in these residences and concerning for the neighboring community. I categorically denounce this behavior, and I am aware that numerous residents in Thetford share my revulsion and apprehension.
“Subsequent to these events, numerous residents from diverse backgrounds have reached out to my office expressing apprehensions about their safety. While I do not possess information regarding the immigration status or legal standing of the individuals housed in these properties, I emphasize that they are human beings entitled to the same rights afforded to all residents in this nation.
“Regardless of our personal opinions on immigration, mob rule and vigilantism are intolerable.”
