Ukraine’s defense industry is collaborating with European firms to create a new weapon system intended to replace the US Patriot missile, designed to counter Russia’s dangerous ballistic capabilities.
The initiative comes as Ukraine’s President implied that delays in receiving much-needed Patriot missiles may be a strategic move by the US to undermine Ukraine’s position in future peace negotiations. Recent ballistic attacks by Kremlin forces in Ukraine resulted in the death of at least 13 individuals, while Ukraine retaliated with deep-strike drone strikes targeting Russia’s energy sector.
Fire Point, a drone and missile manufacturer in Kyiv, has formed partnerships with twelve European defense companies to contribute radar and guidance technology to the Freyja missile project. This collaborative effort, involving ten governments and twelve major defense corporations including Eurosam, Leonardo, Thales, and SAAB, was officially launched in Paris last month.
Ukraine heavily relies on US-manufactured Patriot missiles to intercept ballistic threats traveling at supersonic speeds, particularly to counter Putin’s missile arsenal. However, due to global shortages exacerbated by conflicts in Iran, Ukraine finds itself vulnerable and in urgent need of missile defense systems.
Recent missile and drone attacks in Kyiv led to the loss of 17 lives, with an additional 13 fatalities reported in Ukraine from further Russian assaults. President Vladimir Putin’s relentless ballistic missile strikes underscore the critical need for swift action and support from European and American allies to safeguard Ukrainian lives.
The CEO of Fire Point, Iryna Terekh, expressed optimism about the progress of the new missile project, highlighting the advanced stage of development involving surveillance radars, tracking systems, and seekers. Efforts are underway to expedite the project timeline and reduce the cost per missile to approximately £800,000, significantly lower than the price of a Patriot missile. The joint European-Ukrainian interceptor missile has reportedly undergone successful testing on five occasions.
