A man known for his continuous growth has passed away at the age of 33 due to complications related to his uncommon medical condition. Sulemana Abdul Samed, who stood at 7ft 4in but was suspected to have grown taller before his demise, succumbed on Monday following an infection in the sores on his legs. Referred to as Awuche in Ghana, he gained local fame for his remarkable height, putting his hometown of Gambaga on the map.
Sulemana Abdul Kudus, a family member, expressed, “Everyone recognized his generosity and kindness. Since his passing, many individuals have been visiting the house to seek clarity on the circumstances of his death.”
Samed’s life took a drastic turn in his early twenties when he began experiencing rapid growth. While working at a butcher’s shop in Accra and saving up for driving school, he woke up one day with a swollen tongue and breathing difficulties. Subsequently, his body continued to grow uncontrollably, leading to a curved spine and the abandonment of his aspirations to become a driver and pursue his passion for football.
Diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting connective tissues, Samed eventually succumbed in a hospital in Tamale after being admitted due to infected leg sores. Although the sores were not directly linked to his syndrome, they were deemed a probable complication.
His towering stature sparked discussions about challenging the record for the world’s tallest individual when a hospital estimated his height at 9ft 6in. However, subsequent measurements by journalists at his home confirmed his height at 7ft 4in. The current tallest living man, according to Guinness World Records, is Sultan Kosen from Turkey, standing at 8ft 3in. The tallest person in recorded history was American Robert Wadlow, who reached 8ft 11in before his passing in 1940 at the age of 22.
