An ex-educator’s attempt to reduce his prison sentence for sexually assaulting a vulnerable student has been denied by the Court of Appeal. The former teacher, Simon Taylor, an Army veteran, received a four-year-six-month jail term at Norwich Crown Court in January for multiple offenses against a teenage girl. Despite arguing that his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) should have been considered more in sentencing, Taylor’s appeal was rejected by the Court of Appeal in London.
The crimes occurred over a span of more than two years, starting when the victim was a student at Hethersett Academy in Norfolk, where Taylor was employed as a teacher, and continued after her departure from the school.
Following the victim’s report, Taylor confessed to two counts of sexual assault, including an incident in his car, a charge of sexual activity with a child in a position of trust, and two counts of sexual communication with a child.
During the appeal, Taylor’s legal team contended that the sentence was excessive, alleging that the sentencing judge did not sufficiently consider mitigating factors, such as Taylor’s PTSD resulting from a leg amputation after an incident in Afghanistan in 2009.
However, the appeal was dismissed by three senior judges who emphasized the victim’s vulnerability and Taylor’s persistent misconduct despite warnings.
According to Mr. Justice Goose, sitting with Lord Justice Foxton and Judge Sylvia De Bertodano, the victim was manipulated and groomed, leading to a significant increase in the sentence to reflect the severity of the offenses.
The judges concluded that the sentence was appropriate, considering the breach of trust due to Taylor’s role at the school and his attempts to delete evidence by contacting the girl through the school’s messaging platform.
Taylor, observing the proceedings from HMP Littlehey in Cambridgeshire, showed no reaction to the dismissal of his appeal. Alongside the prison term, he was also required to sign the sex offenders register, subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, a restraining order, and prohibited from working with children.
