Robert Bush, a funeral director, has been described by one of his victims as transitioning from a “consummate professional” to a “Frankenstein.” Karen Dry, speaking in a video detailing Bush’s misconduct, expressed hope for justice to be served for his crimes. Dry also shared her uncertainty about whether she actually received her parents’ ashes from Bush.
Bush is currently facing sentencing at Hull Crown Court for over 65 offenses committed over a span of 12 years, impacting numerous victims and their families. Karen Dry from Cottingham, Hull, mentioned that despite Bush’s initial charm and professionalism, he turned out to be deceitful, causing distress to many families. She emphasized the difficulty in verifying the authenticity of ashes, highlighting the widespread impact of Bush’s actions.
Another victim, Lucy Ness, recounted her distress upon discovering that she had been given animal remains instead of her baby’s ashes by Bush. Ness, who lost her baby during the Covid pandemic, initially found Bush to be helpful and accommodating but later realized the deception she had fallen victim to, causing her immense emotional turmoil.
Kevin Moxon, owner of Moxon’s Funeral Directors, uncovered disturbing findings after Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, where Bush worked, was raided in March 2024. Moxon disclosed the unsettling state of bodies found at the premises, including some in advanced stages of decomposition, raising concerns about the mishandling of remains.
Bush’s heinous crimes were brought to light when police discovered unidentified ashes in deteriorating containers at the Hull location. Following his arrest, Bush made unfounded accusations against Humberside Police, adding to the gravity of his offenses.
The court proceedings revealed that Bush misappropriated funds exceeding £42,000 on personal indulgences while deceiving grieving families. The sentencing hearing is scheduled to span five days, allowing for the presentation of over 100 victim impact statements. Details emerged of Bush’s fraudulent activities spanning from 2017 to 2024, involving unauthorized funeral plan sales and wrongful distribution of ashes.
Financial records indicated that substantial amounts were funneled into Legacy and Bush’s personal accounts, far surpassing reported turnover figures. The court highlighted transfers totaling £1.7 million from Legacy to Bush’s personal bank account during the period in question.
