Linda Bowman, the mother of Sally Anne Bowman, expressed shock and dismay when a former Metropolitan Police Detective Sergeant, Jason Grafham, reportedly shared disturbing photos of her daughter’s mutilated body with colleagues. Linda condemned Grafham for retaining the graphic images in his desk, stating that it stripped her daughter of dignity.
Grafham, aged 55, retired with his full pension shortly before being found guilty of gross misconduct for distributing the images and engaging in sexually inappropriate behavior towards female coworkers. Linda, aged 64, criticized the decision to allow Grafham to retire while still under investigation, questioning why he was not arrested.
Sally Anne, aged 18, was tragically murdered and raped in Croydon, South London, on September 25, 2005. Mark Dixie, a serial sex offender now aged 55, was convicted of her murder in 2008 and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 34 years.
During the tribunal, Linda emotionally expressed the renewed pain and anguish inflicted on her family by Grafham’s actions. She described the deep impact of discovering that the police officer had possessed and shared distressing images of her deceased daughter, exacerbating their grief.
Grafham, responsible for handling evidence in the case, was found guilty of retaining and displaying the images inappropriately, as well as making lewd comments to female colleagues. The tribunal concluded that Grafham’s actions further harmed Sally Anne’s family and served no legitimate law enforcement purpose.
Det Chief Supt Angela Craggs issued a formal apology to Sally Anne’s family, condemning Grafham’s actions as “despicable, incomprehensible, and deeply disrespectful.” The tribunal chairman, Paul Trevers, criticized Grafham for displaying the photos without justification, failing to treat the victim with respect.
With hopes of setting a precedent for police conduct, Linda emphasized the importance of upholding the privilege and responsibility that come with being a police officer. The case involving Grafham serves as a cautionary tale for law enforcement personnel.
