“One-year-old boy dies tragically at São Paulo day care”

A tragic incident at a day care center in São Paulo, Brazil, resulted in the death of a one-year-old boy named Abdoulaye Dieng. The child’s head became trapped between a mirror and a metal safety bar, leading to asphyxiation. Despite struggling for about six minutes, nursery staff only noticed the situation when they returned from a director’s birthday party and promptly freed him. Abdoulaye was rushed to the Mooca Emergency Care Unit but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The family was initially informed that Abdoulaye had fallen ill and was being taken to the hospital, concealing the true nature of the incident. Allegations surfaced that children were left unsupervised at the day care while staff attended the birthday celebration, prompting an investigation with potential manslaughter charges under consideration.

Following the tragedy, Civil Police officers questioned five employees, including the director, a coordinator, a teacher, a pedagogue, and another staff member. The Municipal Department of Education stated that if irregularities are confirmed, appropriate actions, such as disqualifying the partner organization responsible for the unit, will be taken.

Abdoulaye’s funeral took place on July 24, leaving his father Ibrahima, who has resided in Brazil for eight years, devastated. Acknowledging the profound sorrow, he expressed the emotional toll on himself and Abdoulaye’s mother, emphasizing the challenging road to recovery ahead.
