Andy Burnham has confirmed that he will not push for an early general election if he becomes Prime Minister, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining the state pensions triple lock. Expected to take over from Keir Starmer as the head of the Labour Party later this month, Burnham stated that his primary goal would be fulfilling the party’s 2024 election manifesto. Despite Labour’s significant victory in the recent election, some opposition groups have called for a quick vote as the country anticipates a change in leadership.
During an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, Burnham responded to queries about calling an election by reiterating his dedication to the 2024 manifesto outlined by Labour. He also addressed concerns regarding the cost of the pensions triple lock and affirmed his support for the policy, which guarantees that pensions increase in line with the highest of average earnings, inflation, or a minimum of 2.5%, as stated in Labour’s governance plan.
In response to feedback from Labour MP Callum Anderson, Burnham stressed the importance of honoring manifesto commitments while encouraging open discussions about ensuring a secure retirement for all citizens in the future. With his impending uncontested leadership of the Labour Party on July 17 and subsequent assumption of the Prime Minister position, Burnham also assured that the defense investment plan (Dip) introduced recently would receive full funding.
Regarding foreign policy matters, Burnham assured that he would maintain unwavering support for countries like Ukraine, echoing Starmer’s stance. When questioned about continuing efforts to enhance relations with Europe and negotiate more ambitious trade agreements, Burnham expressed his intention to build on existing initiatives.
