Teen’s Tragic Reservoir Death Sparks Water Safety Caution

A teenager’s body was found in the water near a reservoir in the Greater Manchester area. The incident occurred at Cowbury Reservoir in Stalybridge, prompting a response from the Greater Manchester Police, along with the Fire Rescue Service and Ambulance Service. The authorities were alerted around 6:30 pm, leading to the discovery of the body later that evening. The police have confirmed the identity of the deceased and have informed the family.

Investigators have ruled out any foul play in the tragic event, preparing a report for the coroner. Following this incident, the police have issued a cautionary advisory to the public, advising against swimming or cooling off in reservoirs, rivers, canals, or ponds during hot weather.

Chief Inspector Helen Baxter expressed condolences to the family of the young boy and emphasized the dangers of entering open water. She urged the public to enjoy the warm weather safely and avoid risky water activities. The Mirror’s “Save Lives For Sam” water safety campaign aims to address the rising drowning cases in the UK, advocating for measures like mandatory water safety education in schools, public awareness campaigns, enhanced rescue equipment, the implementation of Sam’s Law, and the appointment of a dedicated Minister for Water Safety.
