A significant fire broke out at a waste recycling plant where over 700 tons of cardboard were on fire. The incident occurred at a warehouse located on Everite Road in Widnes, Cheshire, leading to the dispatch of multiple fire crews and the declaration of a major emergency.
Reports from witnesses described the sky above Liverpool turning black, accompanied by several explosions and a strong chemical odor, causing difficulty in breathing. Ash was observed falling from the sky onto Coronation Drive near the site.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service stated that the fire was spreading rapidly, posing a risk of the building collapsing. Nearby residents were advised to keep windows and doors shut while firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
Due to the fire’s size and smoke plume, it was classified as a major incident. Eight fire engines were deployed to combat the fire, which involved a large amount of waste cardboard in a single-story building. Firefighters were tackling the blaze externally to prevent the building from collapsing, ensuring the safety of all individuals without any reported casualties.
Road closures were implemented on Everite Road, Hale Road, and Ditchfield Road, with drivers cautioned to avoid the area. Fire engines from various locations, including Widnes, Runcorn, Penketh, and others, responded to the scene.
Cheshire Police confirmed their presence at the location to support traffic management in coordination with the Fire and Rescue Service. No injuries were reported, and residents and businesses in the vicinity were advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.
