“Brexit Fallout: One Million Jobs Lost and Economy Damaged”

Brexit is said to have resulted in the loss of up to one million jobs and inflicted lasting damage on the economy. A decade after the pivotal decision to exit the EU, experts assert that ordinary households are bearing the brunt, experiencing sustained declines in living standards.

While the past 10 years have seen various significant events, such as the Covid pandemic and conflicts in the Middle East, economists argue that Brexit remains a key factor contributing to the UK’s persistent economic fragility. According to a report by the Resolution Foundation, Brexit has led to a 6% to 8% drop in the UK’s gross domestic product, a 12% to 18% decrease in investments, a 3% to 4% decline in employment, and a similar drop in productivity.

Professor Gregory Thwaites, a research associate at the Resolution Foundation, highlighted that the economic repercussions of Brexit have been more severe than initially anticipated. He emphasized that the UK is now significantly poorer, estimating an annual loss of £240 billion compared to projections had the UK stayed in the European Union. This economic downturn has translated into the potential loss of up to one million jobs and deprived the average worker of around £2,400 in potential wage increases annually.

Furthermore, the impact of Brexit extends beyond job losses and wage stagnation. A study by the Institute For Public Policy Research revealed that reduced exports to the EU due to Brexit have cost the UK economy an average of £18.1 billion per year, resulting in a 14.5% decline in exports to the bloc compared to pre-Brexit levels.

Various industry representatives have shared their experiences of the negative effects of Brexit. Flower wholesaler Jon Adams described Brexit’s impact on his business as “very traumatic,” citing prolonged delays for lorry drivers at the UK border and increased paperwork and costs that have eroded profits. Similarly, other business owners, like suit retailer Mike Dobell and fishing hook manufacturer Mark Hamnett, have faced challenges such as decreased sales, higher import duties, and complex customs procedures, leading to substantial revenue losses and operational difficulties.

Overall, the long-term repercussions of Brexit continue to unfold across different sectors, reshaping trade relationships, impacting job markets, and posing ongoing challenges to businesses navigating the new post-Brexit landscape.
