A mother who initially mistook her cancer symptoms for pregnancy-related issues or an infection received a devastating diagnosis of one of the most lethal types of cancer while carrying her daughter.
Joanna Walters, 33, was thrilled to learn she was expecting her fourth child, especially since she and her husband already had three sons. Anticipation grew as they found out they were finally going to have a daughter. However, amidst the joy of preparing for her baby girl, Joanna unknowingly started developing inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), a rare and aggressive form of the disease that can often be mistaken for an infection.
Initially attributing the symptoms to pregnancy, Joanna shared her experience to caution other mothers. She noticed a small nodule in her breast, but with the pregnancy news, she assumed it was a normal change related to being pregnant. As her breast swelled asymmetrically with tenderness turning into sharp pain, the nodule grew, accompanied by a red rash and textured skin resembling an orange peel.
Alarmed when her nipple inverted and recognizing similarities to mastitis, Joanna was concerned. She attributed all early signs to pregnancy without considering cancer, as she was unaware of how inflammatory breast cancer could mimic an infection.
Upon mentioning her worries to her midwife at the 20-week appointment, Joanna discovered that the disease had already spread beyond her breast. Following a visual examination, medical professionals suspected inflammatory breast cancer and promptly referred her for a mammogram.
The mammogram unveiled three tumors in Joanna’s left breast and one in her lymph nodes, all identified as cancerous, leading to her swift diagnosis. Overwhelmed by the rapid turn of events, Joanna was shocked to face a rare aggressive cancer despite years of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Commencing treatment immediately after diagnosis, Joanna underwent chemotherapy and other medications while still pregnant. Despite the physical and emotional challenges, she completed chemotherapy before giving birth to her daughter, Naomi, in October 2022. Post-delivery, further tests revealed the extent of cancer spread, prompting additional treatments including radiation therapy and targeted therapies to minimize the risk of recurrence.
Fortunately, subsequent assessments indicated no detectable cancer cells in Joanna’s body, bringing immense relief. She continues to manage her health with prescribed medications, maintaining a positive outlook while juggling work, parenting, and exercise routines.
Joanna underscores the importance of increased awareness to potentially save lives. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasizes the significance of advocating for proper treatment and seeking second opinions to ensure effective management of the disease.
