Two years have passed since Jay Slater tragically disappeared in a remote area of Tenerife, where the challenging terrain has remained unchanged. The 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire went missing during his first trip abroad with friends. After a night out, waking up in an Airbnb, Jay undertook an 11-hour trek back to his accommodation after missing the local bus. Before his phone lost power, he alerted his friends that he was thirsty and disoriented.
Following a month-long search within the Parque Rural de Teno nature reserve in Tenerife, near the location of Jay’s last phone signal, Spanish authorities discovered a young man’s body in a ravine close to a phone mast. Fingerprints confirmed the body belonged to Jay, whose condition was described as ‘very deteriorated.’
An inquest revealed that Jay experienced a fatal fall from a height with immediate devastating effects. Toxicology tests detected the presence of cocaine, MDMA, alcohol, and ketamine in his system. Former Detective Mark Williams-Thomas, who assisted Jay’s family during the search, highlighted Jay’s lack of familiarity with the treacherous terrain, compounded by his impaired decision-making due to substance influence.
The search effort involved extensive resources, including mountain rescue teams, helicopters, drones, volunteers, and local authorities navigating through challenging terrain. Ultimately, Jay’s body was found in the Juan Lopez Ravine, an area known for its perilous conditions. His death was determined to be accidental.
