Politicians convened in Westminster yesterday to urge the government to address water safety concerns before the upcoming school holidays. This plea followed the tragic deaths of 13 children and six adults due to drowning during the recent heatwave. Among the attendees was Lee Pitcher, MP for Doncaster East and Isle of Axholme, who has been a staunch advocate for ensuring the safety of young individuals in water.
Pitcher emphasized the urgent need for governmental intervention to prevent further loss of lives. He stressed the importance of launching a national campaign to educate the public about the risks of unsupervised water activities, especially with the anticipated hot summer and increased alcohol consumption during events like the World Cup.
The gathering, which included MPs, sports figures, activists, and grieving families, aimed to support the “Save Lives for Sam” campaign initiated by the Mirror. The campaign seeks to raise awareness and promote water safety education among children, particularly as the six-week school summer break approaches.
The event featured Simon Haycock, who tragically lost his son Sam in a water-related incident, highlighting the misconceptions about swimming in open water compared to pools. Vanessa Abbess, another bereaved parent, shared the story of her son Joe, who lost his life in a rip current. MP Jim Dickson also joined the call for improved water safety measures following a drowning incident in his constituency during the recent heatwave.
Pete Kennedy, Policy and Public Affairs Manager at the Royal Life Saving Society UK, lauded the collaborative efforts of MPs, charities, and affected families in advocating for immediate action to prevent drownings. As Drowning Prevention Week approaches, the urgency to disseminate life-saving information to children before the holidays is paramount.
Various organizations, including the Royal Life Saving Society UK, the RNLI, and Swim England, have joined forces with the Mirror, MPs, and bereaved families to champion water safety initiatives. Olympic champions Becky Adlington and Tom Dean, along with elite swimmer Michael Gunnin, have also lent their support to the cause.
Collectively, the coalition is calling for enhanced water safety measures and educational campaigns to safeguard individuals, especially young people, from preventable water-related tragedies.
