A significant strike by Ukrainian drones has caused severe damage to several important Russian military installations, following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rejection of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal for direct talks to end the conflict. Kyiv conducted a series of attacks on various targets in Russia on the night of June 6, targeting locations such as the St. Petersburg and Leningrad regions, including the historic Kronstadt Marine Plant and a naval ammunition depot in Lebyazhye.
In response to Zelensky’s letter, where he hinted at Putin’s age, the Kremlin leader criticized his counterpart for being disrespectful and rejected the idea of negotiations during a speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Instead, Putin urged his troops to persevere in the face of the ongoing conflict, emphasizing national pride and support for the soldiers on the front lines.
The aftermath of the drone strikes showcased the extent of the damage inflicted on Russia, with a major naval ammunition depot in the Leningrad region being set ablaze and causing explosions. This led to a Category 1 alert due to the presence of hazardous explosives, prompting a lockdown in St. Petersburg for safety measures.
Concerns arose over Putin’s whereabouts following the attacks, as he had recently appeared in St. Petersburg. Reports indicated that several key Russian facilities, including the Kronstadt naval port and the V. A. Fock Institute of Physics, were targeted by Ukrainian drones, while a fire erupted at the Poltava oil depot in the Krasnodar region.
The ongoing conflict has disrupted transportation routes, such as Hell’s Highway and other strategic roads, leading to chaos and restrictions on travel. Ukrainian forces also targeted the Research Institute of Marine Thermal Engineering in St. Petersburg, a crucial site for Russia’s naval weapon development.
As tensions escalate, Zelensky criticized Putin’s reluctance to engage in peace talks, accusing the Russian leader of prolonging the war for personal gain. The Ukrainian president emphasized the need for international pressure to force Russia to reconsider its stance on the conflict, hinting that internal dissent within Putin’s circle could eventually push for negotiations to cease hostilities.
