Ceasefire Crumbles: Iran’s Missile Attack on Kuwait Sparks Tensions

The ceasefire in the Middle East has faced criticism following a missile exchange between Israel and Iran in a significant escalation, despite claims of peace talks by Donald Trump. Iran’s missile attack on Kuwait resulted in one fatality and numerous injuries, pushing the region to the brink of conflict.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps took responsibility for the attack, citing retaliation for the US targeting an Iranian oil tanker and Qeshm Island. The US military defended its actions as self-defense, stating that it disabled the tanker’s engine due to it breaching a blockade.

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper strongly condemned Iran’s assault on Kuwait’s main airport, which sustained heavy damage and briefly closed. Kuwait reported one fatality and 63 injuries from the attack, with the victim identified as an Indian national.

Calls for de-escalation and dialogue were made by Foreign Minister Hamish Falconer and Conservative shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel. The Kuwaiti government confirmed severe damage to the airport, which had only recently reopened.

Reports indicated that Iranian missiles aimed at Kuwait disintegrated mid-air, while the US military intercepted drones targeting American forces. Kuwait’s defense spokesperson disclosed halting numerous ballistic missiles and drones, highlighting Iran’s aggression towards US-aligned neighbors.

Following clashes with Israel in February that led to the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran retaliated by blocking the vital shipping lane, the Strait of Hormuz, impacting global oil transportation. Israeli forces continued operations in southern Lebanon, with casualties reported on both sides.
