UK Braces for Summer Heatwave Surge

The UK is facing the prospect of heatwave conditions in the coming months, according to the latest forecast from the Met Office. This prediction comes after a scorching heatwave in May, where temperatures soared to a record-breaking 35.1C in London’s Kew Gardens.

Weather models indicate that temperatures could rise above 30C by mid-month, with the Met Office releasing a long-term outlook for June, July, and August, suggesting a higher likelihood of hotter-than-usual conditions this summer. While average conditions are still possible, forecasters emphasize the increased chance of a hot summer.

This trend towards more heatwaves aligns with the ongoing rise in UK temperatures associated with global climate change, as mentioned in the forecast. MeteoGroup, a provider of weather data to BBC Weather, also predicts above-average temperatures and potential high temperature spikes throughout June, July, and August in the UK and across Europe.

Looking ahead, the Met Office’s forecast for the upcoming weeks points to showers and rain in the north-west, with the south-east likely to remain dry. Towards the end of the period, more settled conditions are expected, particularly in the south, with near-normal temperatures overall.

As we move into late June and early July, high pressure is anticipated to bring drier conditions to most parts of the UK, accompanied by above-normal temperatures and light winds. However, low pressure towards the end of June could lead to heavy showers and thunderstorms in the south, potentially bringing hot weather to some areas.
