“NATO Condemns Russian Drone Attack in Romania”

NATO has criticized Russia for its “reckless” actions following an incident where a drone hit a 10-story residential building in southeastern Romania, resulting in a fire and causing injuries to two individuals.

The drone crashed into the building in Galati, located in the east of Romania, during a Russian attack on Ukraine on Friday. This marks the first time in Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine that a drone has struck a densely populated area in Romania, leading to casualties.

A spokesperson from NATO expressed condemnation towards Russia’s recklessness and reiterated NATO’s commitment to enhancing defenses against various threats, including drones. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has been in communication with Romanian authorities regarding the incident.

In response to the attack, Romania’s defense ministry deployed two F-16 fighter jets and a military helicopter to monitor the situation. Pilots were authorized to intercept any drones, and residents in border areas were advised to seek shelter as a precaution.

Since the conflict began, Russian drones have violated Romanian airspace 28 times. Romanian law permits the military to shoot down drones during peacetime if there is a threat to life or property, but such action has not been taken yet. Fragments from drones have landed in Romania on 47 occasions since the conflict started.

Romania’s Foreign Minister, Oana Toiu, announced that the country would pursue diplomatic measures in response to the violation of its airspace. Romania has also requested expedited assistance from its allies and NATO to enhance its anti-drone capabilities.

In a separate incident, a drone without an explosive charge was discovered in northwestern Romania, prompting an investigation into its origin and presence in the area. Meanwhile, in southern Ukraine, the Izmail port in the Odesa region was targeted by drones, a location of strategic importance near the Romanian border.

Following the incident in Galati, where a fire broke out in an apartment building, emergency services reported that two individuals were receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained. The drone’s explosive payload detonated upon impact, leading to the extinguishing of the fire.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drone attack and its impact on the community, emphasizing the need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of such incidents.

In conclusion, the recent drone attack in Romania has raised concerns about regional security and the need for coordinated efforts to address emerging threats.
