A fresh wildfire is currently spreading in the countryside near Colchester, being fought by numerous firefighters. This development follows a recent devastating wildfire at Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, which ravaged wildlife habitats and may require up to 25 years for recovery.
The Suffolk coastal area was engulfed in flames around 5 pm on Wednesday, affecting an area approximately the size of 140 football fields near the Sizewell B nuclear power plant. The blaze also impacted parts of the RSPB’s Minsmere nature reserve, home to rare birds and reptiles.
Adam Rowlands, the Suffolk area manager for the RSPB, mentioned that the recovery of the habitat may take several years, ranging from five to 25 years. Despite the ongoing fire at Dunwich Heath, operations at the Sizewell B power station remain unaffected.
In a separate incident, a new wildfire has broken out in Essex, with over 30 firefighters responding at Middlewick Ranges on Mersea Road in Colchester. Emergency services have advised people to steer clear of the affected area, emphasizing the need to keep access roads clear for fire engines and hydrants.
Efforts to combat the blaze involve various tactics, including the use of off-road vehicles, quad bikes, and water backpacks to reach challenging areas. The fire service is coordinating a multi-agency response, with additional resources on standby if required. The situation is being closely monitored, with a major incident in place, and people are cautioned to adhere to safety protocols and avoid the impacted zone.
