A prominent water safety organization has commended Keir Starmer for supporting the Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam initiative and urged the Prime Minister to develop an action plan before the summer season.
Following 19 fatalities, including 13 children, during last month’s unprecedented heatwave, the Prime Minister has promised government assistance. The Royal Life Saving Society expressed gratitude to the Labour leader for endorsing their cause.
The charity’s CEO, Simmy Akhtar, praised the Prime Minister’s strong commitment to preventing future drownings. Calling for immediate action, the charity emphasized the need for an urgent roundtable meeting to establish a plan before the summer holidays, a critical period for water-related incidents.
As temperatures are expected to soar this weekend, thousands are anticipated to flock to beaches. With an amber extreme heat warning issued by the Met Office for certain regions, the charity’s plea for action becomes more pressing.
Acknowledging the Mirror’s water safety campaign, Keir Starmer expressed deep concern over the recent tragedies, especially involving children. He vowed to support the initiative and take necessary measures to ensure safety, particularly for young lives lost.
The Save Lives for Sam campaign aims to prevent the deaths of 33 children annually in open water across the country. Named after Sam Haycock, a teenager who tragically drowned in 2021, the campaign advocates for public awareness, safety equipment at key locations, water survival lessons in schools, the appointment of a Minister for Water Safety, and stricter laws to deter vandalism of safety equipment.
Labour MP Lee Pitcher praised Mr. Starmer’s personal commitment to the cause and urged the immediate adoption of Sam’s Law. With cross-party and public support, as well as backing from the PM, the campaign seeks to save lives without delay.
Advocates and families impacted by water-related tragedies are pushing for urgent action, emphasizing the need for swift implementation of safety measures. The campaign has garnered support from various organizations and public figures, highlighting the importance of water safety awareness and prevention efforts.
