The Vancouver Rise have received reinforcements with the recent addition of two defenders to their squad. This move comes ahead of a crucial match against the Halifax Tides on Saturday. Chantelle Swaby, previously with Leicester City in the Women’s Super League, and Kaela Hansen from NSL side AFC Toronto, have joined the Rise.
Head coach Anja Heiner-Moller expressed optimism about the new signings, highlighting Swaby’s physicality and confidence on the field, as well as Hansen’s eagerness to contribute and adapt to the team’s style of play. Swaby, 28, brings a wealth of experience from various leagues around the world, including the National Women’s Soccer League and France’s top division.
Reflecting on her experience, Swaby emphasized her ability to stay composed during intense game moments and provide leadership from the backline. Meanwhile, Hansen, 26, shared her excitement about returning home to Vancouver, emphasizing the special opportunity to play in front of a local crowd and be near her family.
These acquisitions come after the retirement of Mariah Lee, who decided to pursue law school in New York, leading to Vancouver loaning goalkeeper Kirstin Tynan to the Tides for the remainder of the season. The Rise, currently aiming to secure a playoff spot, are trailing Halifax by five points in the standings.
