Unifor and General Motors have initiated discussions for a new labor agreement, with negotiations commencing at a bargaining table in downtown Toronto on Monday. The union represents over 4,600 members across various Ontario GM facilities, including the Oshawa assembly plant, the CAMI facility in Ingersoll, as well as operations in St. Catharines and Woodstock.
Unifor’s national president Lana Payne and Jack Uppal, president and managing director at GM Canada, marked the start of talks with a handshake. Seated at opposite ends of a conference room, Payne positioned herself in the middle while Uppal sat directly across from her.
Expressing optimism, Payne stated in a news release on Monday that they are building on the foundation set by the agreement with Ford for these negotiations with GM. The goal is to engage in meaningful discussions regarding company operations and the future of auto jobs in Canada.
The union has set a target deadline of August 21 to reach a preliminary agreement with GM. Uppal, in a separate news release, emphasized the company’s respect for the collective bargaining process and the significance of its employees in its accomplishments.
Highlighting their previous success, Unifor members recently approved a new three-year contract with Ford, featuring annual pay raises and program commitments. The agreement includes provisions for laid-off workers from Ford’s Oakville plant to secure full employment by July 2027.
Unifor has hailed the Ford deal as a model for negotiations with other companies in the automotive sector through pattern bargaining. Despite potential challenges ahead, including the idling of GM’s Ingersoll plant and Stellantis’ Brampton plant, the union remains committed to advocating for the industry amidst external pressures like U.S. tariffs and the influx of Chinese electric vehicles into Canada.
