Ukraine has officially declared the end of the “spirit of Anchorage” following Russia’s acknowledgment of fuel shortages.
The phrase previously symbolized a new era of collaboration between Russia and the US after a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska last year. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Moscow’s assertions of undisclosed agreements with the US during the August 2025 summit, stating that such expectations have now been shattered.
Sybiha dismissed Russia’s claims of informal deals between Trump and Putin and emphasized that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied any agreements being reached in Anchorage, contradicting Putin’s narrative. He stressed that any peace initiatives excluding Ukraine would ultimately fail.
Highlighting the significance of involving Ukraine in peace negotiations, Sybiha remarked that Russia must abandon illusory beliefs and engage in meaningful discussions to address the worsening situation in the conflict.
Meanwhile, President Putin acknowledged a fuel scarcity issue in Russia for the first time on Sunday and pledged to enhance security measures at oil facilities while increasing fuel production.
