“UK Millionaires Urge Wealth Tax for Fairer Society”

Over 100 millionaires based in the UK, including former Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, have signed a letter urging Prime Minister Andy Burnham to implement a wealth tax. The letter, organized by Patriotic Millionaires UK, advocates for higher taxes on the wealthiest individuals in the country rather than on ordinary workers.

Andy Burnham has expressed support for a wealth tax in the past and indicated a willingness to seek additional contributions from the richest members of society. The proposed wealth tax, supported by Patriotic Millionaires and Tax Justice UK, suggests a 2% annual tax on wealth exceeding £10 million, affecting approximately 20,000 individuals in the UK, which is less than 0.04% of the population.

Gary Lineker, one of the signatories to the letter alongside 120 other millionaires, emphasized the importance of unity in creating a more equal society. He highlighted the value of paying a fair share and called for the wealthiest individuals to contribute more to build a better and fairer Britain.

Andy Burnham, prior to assuming office, did not rule out the possibility of a wealth tax during an interview with Gary Lineker. He emphasized the importance of fairness and avoiding division while acknowledging the need for a sense of equality in society.

Wes Streeting, the newly appointed Defence Secretary, had previously supported the idea of a wealth tax as an effective measure when he resigned from Keir Starmer’s Cabinet in May.
