UK Heatwave: Temperatures to Soar, Surpass 30C

Parts of the United Kingdom are expected to experience heatwave conditions resembling the warmth of Barbados in the Caribbean. Forecasts indicate temperatures soaring up to 32C in the hottest spots, with the rest of the country gradually rising to the high 20s later this week.

Southern and south-eastern regions of England are set to encounter heatwave temperatures by Saturday, June 20, and more extensively by Sunday, June 21. Additionally, other southern areas could see temperatures hitting 30C by Friday, June 19.

The Met Office defines a heatwave as three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or surpassing the heatwave threshold. The threshold varies across regions, ranging from 25C in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and parts of the south-west of England to 28C in London and its surrounding counties.

Barbados, in the eastern Caribbean, is expected to have temperatures fluctuating between 26C and 30C on Sunday. Further, the south and south-east of England may experience even higher temperatures reaching 33C on Monday.

Despite the high temperatures, intermittent spells of rain are anticipated, especially in northern and western areas, along with a slight possibility of thunderstorms in south-eastern England.

A yellow heat health alert has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for several regions from Wednesday, June 17, to Monday, June 22. This alert signifies a heightened risk to vulnerable individuals and increased healthcare service utilization within affected areas.

Gregory Wolverson, deputy chief forecaster at the Met Office, highlighted the contrast in weather patterns across the UK, with unsettled conditions in the north-west and rising heat in the south and east. He emphasized the likelihood of rising temperatures over the weekend, potentially meeting heatwave standards in many southern and eastern parts of England.

While temperatures are expected to be high, not all regions may experience continuous sunshine due to increased cloud cover. Thunderstorms may also develop, bringing heavy showers and localized impacts in certain areas.

People visiting coastal areas are advised to be cautious of sea-surface temperatures, which may not be as warm as mid-summer temperatures. Following incidents of fatalities in open water during previous hot spells, safety measures are recommended for those engaging in water activities.
