“Fatal Train Collision in Bedford: Driver Ignored Red Signal”

A fatal train collision near Bedford occurred after the train driver, identified as Shaun Burton, 60 years old, failed to heed a red signal prior to the crash, according to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB). The incident resulted in Shaun Burton’s death and injuries to over 100 individuals when a London-bound service collided with another train on Friday.

RAIB’s initial findings revealed that the train operated by Mr. Burton went past a red signal shortly before the collision. Following the crash, 102 people required hospital treatment, with 53 individuals still hospitalized, including eight in critical condition.

The investigation indicated that the East Midlands Railway service from Nottingham to London St Pancras experienced an unexpected stop due to an Automatic Warning System (AWS) malfunction, causing the train’s brakes to engage while on the Up Fast line between Bedford and Flitwick. Consequently, the signaling system changed the signal to red to safeguard the immobile train from oncoming traffic.

CCTV footage showed the East Midlands Railway service from Corby to London St Pancras passing two yellow caution signals before approaching signal WH154. The investigation could not determine the indication received by the driver from the train’s automatic warning system equipment. Subsequently, the Corby service collided with the stationary Nottingham train around 5:15 pm.

The crash resulted in 162 people sustaining injuries, with 102 requiring hospitalization. As the investigation by RAIB continues, it will focus on analyzing the events leading up to the collision, the effectiveness of safety systems on the train, and the circumstances that led to the train’s halt on the track.
