As the UK braces for another heatwave with temperatures potentially exceeding 35C, disruptions in train services are expected this week. Some train schedules have been altered, and certain trains will operate at reduced speeds.
In light of the upcoming scorching temperatures, the Met Office has advised customers to travel by train only if absolutely necessary. East Midlands Railway (EMR) has recommended that passengers plan their journeys before noon to avoid the peak heat and potential service interruptions.
EMR has announced that regional train services connecting Nottingham to Worksop and Leicester will be halted from noon on Wednesday to mitigate the impact of extreme heat on the rail network. Additionally, other train services will operate at reduced speeds for safety precautions.
The elevated temperatures pose risks such as rail buckling, sagging overhead electric wires, and lineside fires. Steel rails can surpass 50C when the air temperature hits 30C, leading to potential safety hazards.
Philippa Cresswell, the customer experience director at EMR, emphasized the need for temporary service adjustments to ensure safe operations during the hot weather. Passengers are advised to check their journeys beforehand and consider traveling before midday if essential.
EMR mentioned that plans for Thursday and Friday are pending review, urging customers planning to travel on those days to stay updated for any changes. The company appreciates passengers’ patience and understanding as they work to maintain safe travel conditions.
