The UK Health Security Agency has issued a heat health warning as drought conditions have been declared in North Wales and the Upper Severn, following unprecedented dryness, heatwaves, wildfires, and declining river levels.
This declaration marks the first instance of declaring a drought in the UK this summer. These dry conditions follow last year’s drought summer, indicating an increasing trend of extreme weather events driven by human-induced climate change, primarily attributed to the burning of fossil fuels.
The Met Office has forecasted temperatures reaching 30C in parts of South East England on Friday, with Scotland and Northern Ireland experiencing cloudy patches. Rainfall is expected to move southwards on Saturday, extending from Scotland and Northern Ireland to northern England and parts of Wales. By Sunday, temperatures are anticipated to cool down across most of the UK, with possible rain showers in areas that have seen minimal rainfall in recent weeks.
Heat alerts have been issued at the start of a period when millions of motorists are expected to embark on summer road trips. The AA has reported that around 6.3 million drivers are planning road trips exceeding 100 miles between Friday and Thursday. The Port of Dover is bracing for increased activity but has taken measures to minimize delays caused by new EU border checks.
