An 18-month-old girl tragically passed away after being inadvertently left inside a nursery transport vehicle for an extended period of time.
The toddler, identified as Sofia, was picked up for nursery in Portugal at around 8 am but was left inside the vehicle unnoticed by nursery staff. It wasn’t until her mother arrived later in the day to collect her that it was discovered she had never made it to the nursery.
Sofia’s grandmother mentioned that the child’s daily drop-off routine should have been recorded, and it was concerning that no record of her arrival was available on that day.
Although the child was supposed to attend a nursery in the Pragal area, the vehicle she was found in was parked outside a different site operated by the same institution on Avenida do Cristo Rei.
Emergency responders, including firefighters, an INEM medical team, and PSP officers, were called to the scene. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, Sofia was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are treating the incident as a case of suspected negligence, with Portugal’s Judicial Police initiating an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
The president of the Commission for the Protection of Crime Victims emphasized that the situation appeared to be a result of negligence rather than intentional harm. He highlighted the lack of proper procedures and negligence in ensuring the safety of the children under the institution’s care.
The tragic incident has had a profound impact on the child’s family, as well as the nursery staff and management. The investigation will focus on determining the extent of negligence and ensuring accountability for the oversight that led to Sofia’s untimely death.
