“Tragic Murder: Couple Convicted in Toddler’s Assault and Death”

An individual who had a warrant for their arrest 18 months prior to a tragic incident where his girlfriend’s two-year-old child was sexually assaulted and killed, has been convicted of murder and child cruelty. Isabelle Welsh endured a series of abuses, including sustaining 21 broken bones, before collapsing at her residence in Thornaby, Teesside. The culprits, Alexandra Walker, 26, and her partner Harrison Simpson, 22, were found guilty following a trial at Teesside Crown Court. Simpson was also found guilty of sexually assaulting Isabelle, whereas her mother was acquitted of the same charge.

Cleveland Police admitted to neglecting the warrant issued by Teesside Magistrates’ Court for Simpson’s arrest in March 2024, which was related to breaching a non-molestation order. This order was established to protect victims of domestic abuse, as Simpson had reportedly harassed and threatened a woman. Despite multiple efforts to locate and apprehend him, the police were unsuccessful.

Acknowledging the inadequacy of the situation, the police initiated a review upon Simpson’s arrest for murder. This assessment led to several enhancements in their procedures, including improved monitoring of outstanding warrants and a robust oversight system managed by a superintendent.

During the trial, Ms Justice Norton described the murder as the conclusion of a prolonged cycle of violence, which the perpetrators attempted to hide. Simpson and Walker were sentenced to life imprisonment, with Simpson receiving a minimum term of 28 years and six months, and Walker 22 years, minus time spent on remand. The prosecutor highlighted the deliberate and extreme nature of the violence, labeling it as a planned campaign.

Ms Justice Norton expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of a young child at the hands of those entrusted to care for her. She emphasized the distress caused by such a heinous act and revealed that the toddler suffered a fatal head injury within 24 hours of her death. Additionally, the judge disclosed that the child was sexually assaulted around the time of the fatal blow, shedding light on the horrific circumstances surrounding the incident.
