A 19-year-old young man tragically lost his life in Nottinghamshire after drowning in Balderton Lake while enjoying time with friends. The distressing incident, which occurred during a heatwave on May 28, was captured on video and widely shared on social media.
The victim, identified as Panashe Muchenje, was of Zimbabwean descent and was seen struggling in the lake after entering the water with his friends. The footage of his drowning has caused great distress to his family, who have called for the removal of the video from online platforms.
In response to this incident, The Mirror has launched the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of drowning, especially concerning children. The family of the deceased has requested that people refrain from speculating about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Emergency services arrived at the scene and attempted to revive Muchenje, who had been in the water for approximately 22 minutes. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Nottinghamshire authorities have clarified that his death is not considered suspicious.
Local officials, including Nottinghamshire County Councillor Johno Lee, have expressed shock and dismay at the circulation of the video online. They have urged social media companies to remove the footage promptly and called for a thorough review of any related content.
Maxwell Muchenje, the victim’s nephew, fondly remembered Panashe as a vibrant and caring individual who was actively involved in his church community. The funeral for the young man is scheduled for June 9, where friends and family will pay their respects.
Authorities emphasize the dangers of open waters, especially during hot weather, and urge the public to exercise caution. The community mourns the loss of the young man and offers support to his grieving family during this difficult time.
