A tragic incident occurred when a 13-year-old girl lost her life in a drowning accident during a family birthday barbecue just a day before her 14th birthday. Palwasha Akbar passed away after encountering difficulties in the River Wharfe at Burnsall, North Yorkshire, as confirmed by a coroner on June 18.
The family had gathered at the picturesque riverside location to celebrate Palwasha’s upcoming 14th birthday on June 1 with a joyful barbecue during the warm weather spell in May. Assistant North Yorkshire coroner Alison Norton disclosed that Palwasha was at Bolton Abbey, particularly Burnsall, on May 31, 2026, when the tragic incident unfolded. She was rescued from the water and rushed to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she was later pronounced dead.
The coroner’s preliminary findings attributed Palwasha’s death to drowning. Born in Pakistan on June 1, 2012, Palwasha resided in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The brief hearing was adjourned for a future date.
Palwasha’s untimely demise was part of a series of open-water incidents resulting in at least 19 fatalities during the hot weather at the end of May. Following her passing, her family released a statement praising her as a compassionate and vibrant young girl whose loss had deeply saddened her loved ones and community.
In response to such tragedies, the Mirror has initiated the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign to address the alarming rate of drowning incidents, especially among children in England. Advocates have labeled drowning in the UK as an “epidemic” and a “national emergency,” urging immediate government intervention.
The recent heatwave from May 24th to the 31st recorded a distressing toll of 19 individuals, including children and adults, losing their lives in water-related incidents, setting a grim record for a single week. The situation has prompted a united call for urgent action to combat the rising fatalities from drowning incidents in the UK.
