A teenager’s prank on a United Airlines flight to Spain led to an emergency turnaround when his Fitbit device was mistakenly labeled as a ‘bomb,’ causing alarm among passengers. Approximately 90 minutes into the journey from New Jersey to Mallorca, security flagged the fitness tracker, prompting urgent measures to be taken.
The crew made repeated announcements instructing all passengers to immediately disable their Bluetooth devices after the incident. Passengers were informed that failure to comply would result in the plane being rerouted back to its origin. Despite the warnings, two devices remained active, including the Fitbit device named ‘bomb’ by the 16-year-old passenger.
The situation escalated as the crew issued increasingly tense warnings, citing safety concerns related to Bluetooth interference. The incident caused significant disruption and necessitated swift action to ensure the safety of the flight and its passengers.
