“Teen Kayaker Struck by Lightning on Florida River”

An 18-year-old kayaker tragically passed away after being struck by lightning while on the Blackwater River in Santa Rosa County, Florida. Michael Aidan Vargas was with his father and a group from the Navy’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreation program when the incident occurred. Despite efforts to rescue him, Vargas could not be saved.

Following the incident, a search operation was initiated involving the Navy personnel and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Dive teams were deployed to scour the river, eventually recovering Vargas’s body.

In a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, Vargas’s sister Marissa expressed her deep sorrow, describing him as her guardian angel and emphasizing his purity and the impact he had on those around him. She encouraged sharing memories of Vargas and pledged to keep his memory alive until they meet again.

The family requested that any support or donations be directed to Daphne Search and Rescue. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission extended their condolences to Vargas’s family and loved ones during this challenging time.

This incident marks the second lightning-related fatality in the United States for the year 2026, as reported by the National Lightning Safety Council. On average, 17 individuals have lost their lives annually due to lightning strikes since 2016.
