“Teen driver crashes into elderly man, texts friend ‘I’ve killed someone'”

A young driver crashed his new car into an elderly man and then texted a friend confessing, “I’ve killed someone.” Sonny Horsfall, 18, lost control of his Audi A4 on West Dyke Road in Redcar, North Yorkshire, on April 22, hitting the 84-year-old pedestrian who was walking home.

Following the collision, Horsfall, a chef at a wellness retreat, ordered a pizza shortly after the incident. The damaged Audi had its front wheel hanging off, emitting sparks, with a smashed windscreen and bonnet, as described in court.

Emergency services were alerted by a neighbor who discovered the injured man lying on the ground. Horsfall, already banned from driving, had fled the scene, leaving his DNA on the vehicle.

Later investigations revealed that Horsfall had purchased the Audi for £250 on the same day as the incident. He admitted to losing control of the car and hitting someone in a message to a friend, expressing his fear of the consequences.

Despite surviving the crash, the elderly victim sustained severe injuries, including a hip that required surgical reconstruction. He faced challenges in his recovery, needing rehabilitation to regain mobility and independence.

Horsfall, residing in Kirkbymoorside, was sentenced to three years in prison and a four-year driving ban. The court heard that Horsfall, suffering from PTSD, expressed remorse for his actions and the consequences of his reckless driving.

The judge condemned Horsfall’s actions as reckless and harmful, emphasizing the impact on the victim’s life. Detective Constable Rachael Johnson highlighted the severity of the collision and the importance of responsible driving to protect the public.

The court’s decision serves as a reminder of the serious repercussions of irresponsible driving behavior, emphasizing the need for adherence to road regulations to prevent tragic outcomes.
