Neil Gilson, a renowned swimmer, finds motivation in his 10-year-old son, Jack, as he embarks on a remarkable journey to swim the largest lakes in Switzerland. Known as ‘The Legend of the Lakes,’ Neil recently achieved a world record by covering a 61km distance in Lake Maggiore in 17 hours and 14 minutes. He attributes his perseverance to thoughts of his son waiting for him at the finish line, cheering him on.
The father of three, Neil, who manages a hotel in North Devon with his wife Lucie, vividly recalls the challenging times when their son Jack, now four years old, displayed troubling behaviors at a young age due to undiagnosed medical issues. Initially suspected of having autism or Tourette’s, Jack’s condition remained a mystery until a viral video led the family to a diagnosis of PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections). Treatment, including antibiotics and tonsil removal, significantly improved Jack’s condition, offering relief to the worried parents.
Motivated by his son’s journey to recovery, Neil has taken on a series of swimming challenges to raise awareness and funds for PANS PANDAS UK charity, supporting families affected by similar conditions. His dedication to the cause is inspired by the struggles his own family faced in seeking answers for Jack’s health issues. With a mission to spread awareness and promote early diagnosis, Neil is determined to make a positive impact through his advocacy work.
Neil’s ambitious swimming feats, including conquering multiple Swiss lakes and setting world records, are part of his ongoing quest to raise awareness and funds for PANS PANDAS UK. His rigorous training regimen, mental preparation, and unwavering determination reflect his commitment to both his athletic pursuits and his advocacy efforts. As he prepares for his upcoming challenges in Switzerland, Neil remains focused on his ultimate goal: completing the monumental Lake Geneva swim alongside his son, Jack, symbolizing their shared triumph over adversity.
