A surgeon has been removed from the medical register after a botched operation led to life-threatening complications for a patient. Dr Yasser Adly Abdel Rahman, a locum surgeon in the NHS, performed an emergency bowel procedure on a young man, causing the patient’s bowels to reconnect incorrectly, posing a severe risk to his life.
The error resulted in the patient’s bowels emptying back into his stomach instead of following the digestive tract, creating a dangerous situation that required immediate intervention to prevent fatality. Despite concerns raised by the patient’s family and other medical professionals, Dr Rahman failed to acknowledge any surgical mishap.
An expert witness from the General Medical Council described Dr Rahman’s procedure as unprecedented and highlighted the severity of the mistake. Dr Rahman, who graduated from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, in 1993, did not participate in the hearing and was not represented legally.
Following the incident at Royal Oldham Hospital in 2020, Dr Rahman faced restrictions on his medical practice, which he violated by accepting a position at Affidea Express Care Clinic in Ireland in 2022. This breach, along with the series of errors in surgery and post-operative care, led to the tribunal’s decision to erase Dr Rahman from the medical register due to his misconduct being deemed incompatible with continued registration.
