“Starmer Faces Defense Spending Pressure at Nato Summit”

Keir Starmer will be under renewed pressure regarding defense spending as he heads to a crucial Nato summit as one of his final duties in office.

The Prime Minister is set to engage with leaders of the defensive alliance in Ankara, Turkey, aiming to solidify his international reputation with just two weeks left in office.

Amid escalating tensions due to the UK and European allies’ resistance to supporting Donald Trump’s conflict with Iran, there are concerns about potential disruptions from the US President at the summit. The White House has been advocating for increased defense spending by Nato member countries.

Priorities at the summit will include discussions on supporting Ukraine, enhancing Europe’s defense capabilities, and reaffirming the UK’s allegiance to Nato, as stated by No10.

The PM’s official spokesperson emphasized the importance of building a more robust and united NATO, ready to assist Ukraine and counter the growing threat posed by Russia.

President Trump has criticized Nato in the past, urging European nations to allocate more funds for defense. Last year, the UK and its allies committed to reaching a defense spending target of 5% of GDP by 2035, including 3.5% for core defense, following pressure from the White House.

Ahead of the summit, the US administration issued a warning that Nato allies must increase defense spending promptly or face potential repercussions.

US Ambassador to Nato, Matt Whitaker, highlighted that while some allies like Poland and the Nordic and Baltic countries are leading in defense spending, others need to step up immediately to reach the 5% target.

Keir Starmer had planned to showcase the UK’s Defense Investment Plan (Dip) at the summit, a strategy to modernize the British military. However, criticism arose over a significant funding gap in the Dip, which the prospective PM Andy Burnham may need to address in his initial budget.

John Healey resigned as Defence Secretary due to concerns that the plan would only raise defense spending to 2.68% by 2030, casting doubts on how the UK will achieve the Nato target.

Meanwhile, President Trump provoked Italian PM Giorgia Meloni by sharing a photo of her with the caption “restraining order needed” before the summit. This came after a dispute where he claimed she had asked him for a photo at the G7 summit to boost her popularity, an accusation she strongly refuted, accusing him of pandering to adversaries of the West.
