Specialized police units dedicated to combatting organized crime have been instrumental in apprehending over a thousand suspected sexual predators, according to recent disclosures. These units have employed tactics typically used to apprehend high-profile criminals to target pedophiles and domestic abusers, resulting in 1,393 arrests, safeguarding 1,351 children, and securing 1,487 years of prison time.
Regional organized crime units (ROCUs) remain focused on combating drug trafficking, serious violence, money laundering, and firearms offenses, with an increasing emphasis on protecting vulnerable members of society.
Recent convictions include Declan Sains, 28, who engaged in illicit online conversations with an undercover police officer posing as a 14-year-old boy. Sains pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to child sexual offenses and received an eight-year, three-month prison sentence.
Another individual, Rhys Meikle, 31, was sentenced to four years in prison after admitting to facilitating child sexual offenses and distributing indecent images of children.
Chief Constable Trevor Rodenhurst, the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for ROCUs, emphasized the evolving nature of organized crime, especially its exploitation of digital platforms to target vulnerable individuals. The ROCU network has evolved significantly to address these emerging threats and continues to play a crucial role in protecting communities.
Deputy Chief Constable Wendy Gunney, the NPCC lead for national Serious and Organized Crime, highlighted the importance of recognizing and addressing vulnerabilities in criminal investigations. She praised the effectiveness of ROCUs in combating serious and organized crime, particularly in fighting violence against women and girls and online exploitation.
Since their establishment in 2013, ROCUs have expanded into a national network comprising around 4,000 officers and staff. Working closely with the National Crime Agency (NCA), these units utilize advanced investigative techniques to support local law enforcement agencies.
In the past year, ROCUs have made significant strides, arresting 4,363 suspects, securing 7,242 years of prison sentences, safeguarding 2,259 children and 823 adults, and making numerous drug and firearms-related arrests. Noteworthy seizures include 95 firearms, 652 rounds of ammunition, as well as substantial quantities of cocaine, heroin, and cannabis.
