Spain issues a fresh warning as wildfires continue to threaten the country post-national emergency declaration.
Mass evacuations took place due to the raging wildfires, with Spain’s meteorological agency cautioning about the likelihood of more fires erupting. A statement released in Spanish by the agency alerts, “Due to the upcoming heatwave, there is a high to extreme risk of fire across most areas today.
“Extreme precautions are advised.” Temperatures are expected to soar to 41C in Toledo, where evacuees from nine of the 11 affected towns were allowed to return home on Tuesday.
Madrid is preparing for temperatures reaching 38C, while Zaragoza is forecasted to hit 40C, as per the Met Office. Seville, Malaga, and Palma are also set to experience high temperatures of 37C, 33C, and 33C, respectively.
The UK government has not issued a general warning for Spain but advises travelers to stay vigilant. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) urges Britons in wildfire-affected zones to “follow local authorities’ instructions, stay updated with emergency services’ alerts, and dial 112 in case of emergencies”.
The Spanish Interior Minister urged the public on Tuesday to “remain cautious,” emphasizing that “a small spark, a moment of negligence, or an oversight can have serious consequences.” The FCDO guidance highlights the importance of properly extinguishing cigarette butts, refraining from lighting barbecues, and not leaving behind any trash, with severe penalties for violating regulations on outdoor barbecues in forested areas.
