A dramatic series of arrests have been carried out while firefighters persist in combatting wildfires that have devastated 42,000 hectares of land in south-west France, extending into parts of the Bordeaux metropolitan area.
Over 220,000 individuals in the Gironde region have been evacuated in what has become France’s largest peacetime evacuation in recent history.
Amidst the evacuation efforts, a few individuals have been apprehended for illicit activities. One individual was taken into custody for allegedly masquerading as a psychologist offering assistance to fire-affected individuals in exchange for payment, as per local authorities cited by Sky News.
Additionally, two men were recently arrested on suspicion of pilfering food and supplies designated for wildfire victims. Law enforcement officials are stationed outside evacuation centers and fire-stricken areas to maintain public safety and safeguard restricted zones.
Even though the regional prefecture has stated that the wildfires are currently “under control” with a few flare-ups subdued overnight, officials have emphasized that unfavorable weather conditions persist. The national weather service Météo-France has forecasted temperatures soaring to 42°C in Bordeaux.
Météo-France has issued a warning of a “high fire risk” across all regions in France today, anticipated to be the hottest and driest day of the week. The latest weather predictions suggest temperatures could peak at 42°C in parts of the Gironde and Landes regions.
Eric Brocardi, spokesperson for France’s national firefighters’ federation, expressed concerns about their operational capacity, acknowledging the challenges posed by the escalating temperatures. Despite the forecasted heatwave, firefighting crews are committed to battling the blazes.
