Southport murderer Axel Rudakubana has been accused by the Prison Officers’ Association of manipulating the system to secure a transfer to Broadmoor Hospital. Rudakubana was responsible for the tragic deaths of three young children and the injury of several others during a violent incident at a dance class in Southport in July 2024.
The Ministry of Justice recently confirmed the relocation of Rudakubana from HMP Belmarsh to Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric facility in Berkshire. Despite the transfer, officials emphasized that he will remain incarcerated and is unlikely to be released in the future.
Representing the bereaved families, Chris Walker expressed concern over the timing of the move, suggesting it may be another attempt by Rudakubana to exploit the system. The families are seeking further information from authorities before making additional comments on the matter.
According to the Chairman of the Prison Officers’ Association, Rudakubana, now 19 years old, has taken advantage of the system to enjoy certain privileges at Broadmoor as a patient, raising concerns for the safety of staff and taxpayers. The association believes that Rudakubana should serve his sentence in solitary confinement in a prison.
Former prison officer and junior housing minister Sally Jameson voiced her disapproval of Rudakubana potentially receiving benefits at Broadmoor. She assured the public that he would not receive any sentence reductions and would be returned to prison promptly.
The Department for Work and Pensions clarified that individuals moved from prison to a hospital setting are not eligible for benefits. Jameson emphasized the stringent security measures in high-security hospitals like Broadmoor, ensuring that Rudakubana will be closely monitored.
Rudakubana, a resident of Banks, Lancashire, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 52 years for his crimes. His transfer to Broadmoor was approved by officials but does not alter the duration of his sentence.
Officials stated that any decision to transfer an offender to a psychiatric unit is based on independent clinical assessments and follows strict security protocols. Rudakubana will remain in the high-security psychiatric unit until deemed fit to return to prison, without any reduction in his 52-year sentence.
