More than 50% of British citizens are concerned about incurring high mobile phone charges due to data usage, especially when traveling to the current year’s World Cup event. The United States has been identified as the most expensive location for using data while roaming, based on a comprehensive study of our data consumption behaviors abroad.
Sky Mobile’s Data Roaming Index has shed light on the activities that deplete our devices and the countries where data usage can become costly, as they extend their roaming coverage from 55 to 120 destinations. Research indicates that neglecting to disable app notifications can lead to a bill of up to £20, while streaming a single movie trailer can result in expenses of up to £120 for Brits.
The index from Sky Mobile reveals that online messaging and unintentionally downloading WhatsApp (56%) are the top data-consuming activities British travelers often engage in abroad. Additionally, using maps and navigation tools (52%) and search engines (48%) rank high in draining data.
Booking dining reservations, tours, and day trips (31%) are significant reasons why Brits opt to use their data regardless of the cost. Moreover, a third of individuals confess to prioritizing social media posts enough to activate data usage, despite the potential hefty charges.
The study also unveils that two-thirds of travelers are unaware of data-saving techniques. To assist Brits overseas, Sky Mobile has compiled a practical guide containing ‘roaming hacks’ to help individuals reduce data consumption while abroad. Recommendations include downloading maps, playlists, and shows prior to the trip, activating low data mode, and disabling automatic cloud syncing.
Failure to follow these tips may result in substantial bills in the US, posing a financial risk for many England and Scotland supporters following their teams this summer. Following the US, Thailand and Barbados rank as the next most expensive countries for roaming charges.
The recent consumer research highlights a clear knowledge gap among Brits concerning roaming practices. Individuals aged 25-34 are nearly twice as likely (48%) as those aged 55-64 (26%) to encounter unexpected expensive roaming fees. Notably, Northern Ireland exhibits the lowest awareness of roaming charges, with over half (51%) rarely or never checking their expenses, almost double the UK average (28%).
Even minor mobile usage abroad can trigger significant charges, turning simple tasks into data-consuming activities without the appropriate plan, potentially saving hundreds of pounds. Sky Mobile’s Roaming Passport Plus now covers 120 destinations, including the top 10 most expensive countries, for just £2 per day, offering customers the convenience of using their UK data, calls, and texts seamlessly while abroad.
Ben Case, Managing Director of Connectivity at Sky, emphasized the importance of simplifying roaming for customers by enabling them to utilize their existing data allowance in 120 destinations for only £2 a day, without any setup requirements or unexpected billing surprises.
With access to roaming in 120 destinations, including the costliest countries, for a nominal fee of £2 per day, Sky aims to streamline connectivity for travelers wherever they go. Roaming Passport Plus activation is automatic, ensuring easy access to UK data, calls, and text allowances without any hassle.
